Point Park undergraduate education majors spent the spring semester tutoring 24 fourth grade students at Barrett Elementary School in Homestead, Pa. and were recently honored at a Steel Valley School District board meeting for their efforts.
“Our focus was on helping the kids get where they need to be,” said Tonya Holfield, a junior Pre-Kindergarten through fourth grade major.
The Point Park students who tutored at Barrett Elementary were from the Reading Methods II and Differentiated Reading Instruction classes taught by Janice Glunk, Ed.D., assistant professor of education and student teaching field supervisor.
“I am very proud of all the students who tutored and the hard work they have done to help these elementary students,” remarked Glunk.
According to the school district’s board brief, Steel Valley would like to continue its partnership with Point Park and invite students from the University back next year.
“The children were so engaged in reading,” said junior Shaasia Jackson, who is majoring in Pre-Kindergarten through fourth grade with a dual certification in special education. “It was an awesome experience.”
