The Professional Edge

Point Park University’s School of Communication offers five options for professionals looking to advance their careers with a Master of Arts.

The M.A. in communication technology will prepare graduate students to excel in technology-driven communication fields, including multimedia, graphic design, social media and digital journalism. The program will prepare students to embrace technology — and technological change — as an essential part of their professional portfolio.

Graduate students who apply for the journalism track can gain expertise in specific subject areas — environmental studies, education, criminal justice and business — through master’s level courses offered by the University’s School of Business and School of Arts and Sciences. The program enables students to complete the degree with an extensive portfolio of journalism or public relations work related to the concentration.

Those students who are not looking to pursue a specialty concentration can be considered for Point Park’s long-established professional- or thesis-track master’s program in journalism and mass communications. The School of Communication, in partnership with the School of Business, also offers a M.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication/Master of Business Administration program with concentrations in public relations and advertising management, print/digital media management and broadcast/digital media management.

Design Your Degree

All tracks allow students to design their degree by completing core classes then selecting courses in the following areas:

  • advertising
  • broadcast journalism
  • broadcast production
  • digital media
  • integrated marketing communications
  • media relations
  • photojournalism
  • print journalism
  • public relations

Students have the option of specializing in a topic area and completing a professional project, producing a professional portfolio, or writing a thesis.

Extensive Media Partnerships

In every aspect of the M.A. program, journalistic work is aimed at publication with the Pittsburgh region’s newspapers, magazines, online publications and multimedia organizations.

The University has extensive partnership arrangements with established and new media organizations and offers the Point Park News Service. This pioneering wire service, one of the best in the country, makes student print, photography and video work available for publication to an ever-expanding list of media organizations.

Tailored to the Busy Adult

The School of Communication’s 36-credit M.A. program is designed for career-directed students. The degree can be completed in as little as two years on a part-time basis. An extremely motivated student may complete the program in one year by taking 12 credits per semester. (The M.A./M.B.A. program requires additional time.)

Graduate courses are taught regularly in the evening so students with daytime jobs may complete the program while working. Evening classes meet once a week, and students can complete two courses a semester by attending classes two nights a week.

At the Center of Communication

As Pittsburgh's only Downtown university, Point Park is located at the epicenter of one of the nation's richest media environments. Students can take advantage of the close proximity to the region’s multimedia organizations, public relations and advertising agencies, TV stations and businesses. Small class sizes mean students get to know their fellow classmates and the full-time and adjunct faculty, all of whom offer their own real-world experience, contacts and leading edge scholarship in journalism, public relations, broadcasting, advertising, new media and media design and production. 

Graduate Scholarship and Assistantships

The J&MC Kathleen Bland Smith Memorial Graduate Scholarship is awarded annually on a competitive and merit basis. Graduate assistantships are available in print journalism (including work with the graduate program director), broadcast journalism and editorial assistance for a communication journal. Graduate assistantships are offered for one year and renewable for a second year and carry a stipend and full tuition waiver. Read more about graduate assistantships.
