Earn a Bachelor's Degree in Funeral Service at our Downtown Pittsburgh Campus
There are three different avenues you can take for our funeral service degree program. Two capstone programs, requiring one year of study, are offered for students with a degree from mortuary school. Or, in cooperation with the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science, Point Park offers a Bachelor of Science degree requiring three years of study at Point Park and one year at PIMS.
Funeral Service Degrees Offered
The following degrees are offered in the funeral service program:
- B.S. in funeral service (traditional)
- B.S. in funeral service (capstone program)
- B.A. in funeral service (capstone program)
Funeral Service Concentration Options
In the traditional and capstone Bachelor of Science programs, students can choose to concentrate in either environmental health or business administration.
In the Bachelor of Arts capstone program, students can choose to concentrate in one of these three areas:
- Government and international studies;
- Human sciences; or
- Natural sciences and engineering technology.
Courses in the Funeral Service Program
You will receive a well-rounded education through Point Park's core curriculum and classes in the funeral service major. Some of the courses include:
- Occupational Safety and Health
- Environmental Health
- Counseling Theories and Practice
- Human Biology
- Public Health
Bachelor of Science in Funeral Service (traditional, non-capstone program)
The Associate in Science degree is awarded upon completion of the 60 required credits taken in the first two years at Point Park. Students seeking a B.S. can complete the third year of study at Point Park, either before or after the completion of their mortuary science degree. The Associate in Science degree provides the academic preparation required by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for admission to a 12-month course of study in mortuary school. Application for acceptance into any approved school of mortuary science is the student's responsibility.
A "Founders’ Scholarship" is awarded each year in honor of the three individuals who established the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science in 1939. it is available to a qualifying member of the Point Park University graduating class in the Associate in Science degree program. The $500 scholarship is applicable to the two terms of study at the Institute of Mortuary Science. This award, granted by the institute, is based on scholarly achievement as well as participation in University and community activities.
Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in Funeral Service (capstone programs)
The capstone program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree is designed for students who have a mortuary school degree and possess an Associate in Science degree in specialized professional studies-funeral service from Point Park or from the Associate in Specialized Business degree from the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science.
The Bachelor of Arts capstone program is intended for students who have a mortuary school degree and an associate degree in an area other than funeral service.
