Point Park University and Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School are pleased to announce a new joint higher education program that allows students to earn a B.F.A. in dance in two years.

Students will receive technical dance instruction from PBT School’s instructors and will fulfill academic requirements through Point Park’s classes, putting graduates on the fast track to a successful career in dance.

“What an extraordinary opportunity to offer the best of both worlds to students interested in a career as a professional dancer," said Garfield Lemonius, M.F.A., dean of the Conservatory of Performing Arts at Point Park and artistic director of the Pittsburgh Playhouse. "That is, professional training from one of the nation's renowned dance companies further strengthened by an exceptional Conservatory education from one of the top 10 university dance programs in the country.”

“We’re thrilled to collaborate with Point Park on this exciting new program,” said Susan Jaffe, artistic director, PBT. “When PBT’s first Artistic Director Nicolas Petrov founded our organization in 1969, it was affiliated with Point Park College, so we are excited to rekindle a partnership that goes back to PBT’s roots. It’s a wonderful opportunity for students to earn a college degree from an exceptional university while gaining valuable dance experience.”

PBT School is recognized as one of the nation’s finest schools for dance education and training. All of PBT School’s instructors are certified through level five in the American Ballet Theatre curriculum, which embraces sound ballet principles and incorporates elements of the French, Italian and Russian schools of training.

“As we launch this education program with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, we look forward to engaging with these dancers through the rigor of our academic coursework," said Colleen Hooper, Ph.D., chair of dance at Point Park. "We are building upon the strengths of both organizations and creating an educational partnership that will benefit dancers at PBT and Point Park.”
