Conservatory's Reputation, Downtown Pittsburgh Location Attracted Alexandra Yargeau to Point Park University's Theatre Department
"The connections students make with industry professionals, the real-life performance experience and performing at a state-of-the-art facility like the Pittsburgh Playhouse is a huge advantage for our students."
Highlight your professional background and what attracted you to work at Point Park University?
My performance background is in music and arts administration. I came to Point Park from the opera industry where I worked as an artistic administrator. I was attracted to work at Point Park because of the Conservatory's reputation in the industry and the location in Downtown Pittsburgh.
In what ways do you support our students as assistant to the chair of theatre?
I am the first stop for many of our students when they need something from the Department of Theatre. I try to always keep my door open in case someone needs help navigating university procedures, needs to reserve a rehearsal space or even needs a listening ear. I really enjoy and value working with our students.
Tell us about how your role supports our faculty and staff.
There are a couple of our faculty members who affectionately refer to me as “the glue” of our department. I do a lot of behind-the-scenes, administrative work to keep the department running smoothly. Every day looks a little different depending on what time of the academic year it is — I could be planning next semester in terms of spaces and sections, or I could be working on planning our senior showcase. I enjoy working on a variety of projects at one time.
What are some of the distinctive advantages for theatre majors at Point Park?
The connections students make with industry professionals, the real-life performance experience and performing at a state-of-the-art facility like the Pittsburgh Playhouse is a huge advantage. Our students are top-notch, and the level of collaboration that they experience just by working in class together is incredible.
What advice do you have for students considering applying and auditioning for to Point Park’s theatre programs?
Take a deep breath. Trust yourself and trust your talent. You can do this!
