"The size of Point Park was a huge benefit. It allowed me one-on-one time with faculty, where I really got to know my professors and they got to know me ... Additionally, the organizations and on-campus programs I participated in acted almost as mini-internships where I could use my developing marketing skills outside of the classroom."
Highlight your career path and professional experiences since graduating from Point Park University.
I was able to graduate a semester early and find a job the fall of my senior year that allowed me to work part time until I graduated, at which point I moved to full time. The job was at a small, up-and-coming digital marketing agency called 321Blink. Because it was a small start-up, I got hands-on experience with so many facets of marketing. It was the ideal first job out of college. I got to try a little bit of everything and really hone in on what I wanted to do for my career.
My husband was starting graduate school in New Jersey, so I got a job at a digital marketing agency working specifically on social media. This was a completely different agency experience and I really narrowed in on social media marketing and content creation. It was a great experience to see how different agencies operate.
A move to New York City led me to apply at Etsy, where I've been working on the social media team since 2015. In my current role, I collaborate with so many partner teams and my past experiences at smaller agencies really helped me have a foundational understanding of all types of marketing.
What are your key responsibilities at Etsy?
My role as social media manager, brand ambassadors, is to lead the social media strategy, content creation and execution for all influencer partnerships and programs. I work very closely with our influencer marketing team to activate our influencer programs and campaigns through a social-first content strategy. From there, I collaborate with creative teams to bring the campaign concept to life through video and photo.
In what ways did your Point Park experience prepare you for professional success?
The size of Point Park was a huge benefit. It allowed me one-on-one time with faculty, where I really got to know my professors and they got to know me. The class sizes meant I had the same classmates for many classes, which allowed me to grow and learn from others. It felt very much like a cohort for four years. Additionally, the organizations and on-campus programs I participated in acted almost as mini-internships where I could use my developing marketing skills outside of the classroom.
How did our faculty impact you?
The faculty at Point Park was extremely supportive and always open to chatting after class, via email or during office hours. The projects and assignments were very hands-on and realistic of what to expect in a real marketing department.
What advice do you have for prospective students?
Get involved as much as you can in on-campus organizations and activities. It's a great way to not only connect with others, but you'll be surprised at the opportunities that come up for you to use skills you are developing in the classroom.
Plus, be your own advocate. Do your research and find opportunities for internships or jobs that may not be presented to you.
Lastly, you have to start somewhere. My experience starting at a smaller company was so beneficial as I moved to larger teams and companies. You never know where opportunities will take you. Consistently learn from each job and take what you learned into your next role.
