"Point Park's civil engineering program has instilled in me a sense of professionalism in my work that I will carry far into my career. For example, my senior capstone course has pushed me to develop proposals and projects at a high level of quality. The coursework provides a solid foundational knowledge and background on how things work and how things are calculated in an engineering project."

How did you land your internship with GAI Consultants?

I found out about the opportunity through Professor Robert Garson, Ph.D., P.E., after I told him I was looking for an internship. It was my first time interviewing for a role like this with a large company, so it was good experience and practice for me. I met with a supervisor and another employee for the interview, during which they discussed the internship duties and responsibilities to see if it aligned with my goals and interests. I started in May and finished my internship in December.

What were your duties and responsibilities?

I worked with the transmission line engineering group, which is the team that designs and builds electrical poles and associated wiring. At first, a lot of my work involved creating and editing documents and building various charts and data reports related to their projects. Eventually I progressed onto designing transmission line models, power line systems pole modeling and foundation design. The internship gave me a hands-on overview of what goes into a project from start to finish. I applied a lot of the concepts I've learned in class directly to my internship, including the various standards we have to follow as engineers. One of my favorite experiences was getting to see a transmission line project come to fruition by the end of my internship.

What were your key takeaways from your internship?

I got to see the actual process that goes into a real-life engineering project, connecting my coursework to my internship tasks along the way. I worked on my professional communication skills, time management and task prioritization. I learned how to balance my schoolwork with my internship responsibilities to maximize my time and productivity.

How is Point Park’s civil engineering program preparing you for career success?

Point Park's civil engineering program has instilled in me a sense of professionalism in my work that I will carry far into my career. For example, my senior capstone course has pushed me to develop proposals and projects at a high level of quality. The coursework provides a solid foundational knowledge and background on how things work and how things are calculated in an engineering project. My favorite faculty member is Dr. Garson. He has really helped me enjoy my time at Point Park and has taken the time to make sure I really understand the coursework. One of my favorite classes was his Software Tools for Engineers class because we got to learn many different software programs that are used in real-world engineering projects.

What do you like about being a student athlete?

Since Point Park isn't a huge school, I'm able to build relationships with students across all the various sports teams, not just on the track and field team. We're able to lean on each other when we're facing challenges and can easily relate to each other.

Why would you recommend Point Park to a prospective student?

I would recommend Point Park because of the small class sizes. I've been able to build meaningful relationships with my classmates, as well as my professors, which makes learning a lot easier and much more enjoyable. Also, the best part about living and learning in Downtown Pittsburgh is that everything is within walking distance of campus, and there is so much to do. For example, I can decide on a Wednesday night to go ice skating over in PPG Place after my night class. Point Park's city location makes it an exciting, entertaining experience, and you feel like you're a part of a bigger environment beyond campus.
